Research Fellow in Statistical Machine Learning for Topological Data Analysis

Location: Highfield Campus
Interview Date: To be confirmed
Fixed Term (2 Years)

Applications are invited for two two-year postdoctoral positions supported by an EPSRC grant “Joining the dots: from data to insight” (http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/N014189/1). This programme will develop a powerful synthesis of data analytic methods from topology, statistics and machine learning for applications in medicine and computational chemistry.

The advertised positions arise in the context of a new exciting interdisciplinary programme developed at Southampton by a team of scientists from Mathematical Sciences, Computer Science, Medicine and Chemistry under the umbrella of the Institute for Life Sciences. The work will cover a wide range of problems from developing new data analytic methodology, algorithmic implementations, to specific applications. Our exemplar applications include clinical studies of asthma (in collaboration with U-BIOPRED, the largest asthma research consortium in the world) and computational molecule design, which is at the centre of research into new drugs for major diseases.

The successful candidates will have a PhD* and should have strong background and research track record in a suitable area of statistics, machine learning, topological data analysis, mathematical chemistry, mathematical biology.

The applicants should have strong computational skills supported by proficiency in a programming language like MATLAB, R, SAS, python, etc., with the emphasis on developing new methodology. The applicants should have a strong interest and track record in interdisciplinary projects and should be able to work successfully in a research team.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The positions will be available from 1 October 2016 and it is our intention to fill them as soon as possible. The starting salary will be in the range £28,982 to £31,656.

Informal enquiries about the positions should be directed to Prof Jacek Brodzki j.brodzki@southampton.ac.uk, or Prof Jeremy Frey J.G.Frey@southampton.ac.uk.
