Applications Open: Commonwealth Routledge Studentship Programme 2025
The Commonwealth Routledge Studentship Programme 2025 is now accepting applications from PhD students across Commonwealth countries. This prestigious initiative offers a research grant of £5,500 to support high-quality research projects that focus on Commonwealth-related themes.
The studentship is funded by The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs and its publisher, Routledge, in collaboration with the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). The award aims to support doctoral research, especially in fields that align with the journal’s focus, including politics, international relations, law, development studies, economics, geography, international history, and area studies.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet one of the following conditions:
- Be a PhD student enrolled at a UK university (you do not need to be a UK citizen),
- Be a PhD student registered at an ACU member university in a Commonwealth country outside the UK, or
- Be an alumnus of a Chevening or Commonwealth Scholarship programme who is pursuing a PhD at a Commonwealth university outside the UK.
The proposed research must:
- Focus on the Commonwealth as a whole or on a Commonwealth-wide institution or organisation,
- Include a strong comparative component involving multiple Commonwealth countries, or
- Be relevant to a specific Commonwealth country other than the UK.
Award Details
- Number of Awards: 2 per year
- Grant Amount: Up to £5,500 per award
Required Documents
Applicants must submit the following:
- A CV
- A studentship plan (in non-technical language) outlining:
- The research to be undertaken during the studentship
- The expected impact and contribution to Commonwealth studies
- Planned outcomes and outputs
- Two letters of support:
- One academic reference (ideally from your PhD/DPhil supervisor)
- One personal reference
