- Both the international research stay and return phase in Germany are mandatory.
- Candidates currently living abroad must demonstrate intent to return and pursue a research career in Germany.
- Applicants with permanent employment contracts at their proposed host institution are not eligible.
- Applications must be submitted within six years of completing a first doctorate.
- Doctorate must be completed with excellent results before funding begins.
Fellowship Benefits
Successful candidates will receive:
- Salary: An 18-month temporary employment contract at a German university, paid under the TV-L EG 13 salary scale (€70,000–€80,000), depending on prior experience.
- Expatriate Allowance: Monthly allowance for the duration of the international stay, based on location and gross income.
- Travel Subsidy: Lump sum provided by DAAD to cover travel costs.
- Support for Family: Spouses and children accompanying the fellow abroad for at least one month are also eligible for travel subsidies.
The fellowship includes:
- A 12-month research stay abroad
- A 6-month reintegration phase at a German university
- Flexibility to split the international research stay across multiple institutions and/or countries
