Applications are now open for the 2025 Mastercard Scholarship at Makerere University, providing qualified candidates with a fully funded opportunity to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
This prestigious scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, as well as expenses related to accommodation, living stipends, a laptop, meals, and return airfare. The program is designed to eliminate financial barriers, enabling scholars to focus on their education and develop into impactful leaders within their communities.
The Mastercard Foundation has extended its partnership with Makerere University for the second phase of the Scholars Program, running from 2023 to 2034. During this period, 1,000 scholarships will be awarded over 10 years for both undergraduate and master’s degree programs at Makerere University's main campus.
Eligibility Requirements for the Mastercard Scholarship at Makerere University
To be considered for the Mastercard Scholarship at Makerere University, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be eligible for admission to Makerere University’s main campus.
- For Undergraduate Applicants: Must have completed Advanced Level education (or its equivalent) in an African country.
- For Master’s Applicants: Must have completed a Bachelor's degree in an African country.
- Demonstrate leadership potential and a strong record of community service.
- Not be a recipient of any other scholarship.
- Age Requirements:
- Undergraduate applicants must be 28 years old or younger at the time of application.
- Master’s applicants must be 35 years old or younger at the time of application.
- Refugee applicants and students with disabilities must be 32 years old or younger for undergraduate studies and 40 years old or younger for master’s studies.
- Refugee applicants must provide official proof of refugee status (refugee attestation) along with their application.
Scholarship Benefits
Successful applicants will receive full financial support, which includes:
- Full tuition fees
- Accommodation in a university residence
- Meals
- Books and study materials
- A modest monthly stipend
- Medical aid
- Travel costs (one return ticket for the entire study period)
- Cost of one visa application for the duration of the program

- Completed Application Form
- Recent passport-sized photo
- Copy of a valid identity document
- Certified copy of undergraduate degree certificate or transcript (for master’s applicants)
- Certified copies of A-Level and O-Level results (for undergraduate applicants)
- Photocopy of National ID or Passport
- Motivation statement (maximum 500 words) for master’s applicants
- Hand-drawn map with clear directions to the applicant’s residence/home.
