PhD Research Studentship Multidisciplinary profiling and tailored physical activity interventions for children

Applications are invited for the above studentship in the School of Sport, Exercise & Health Sciences, Loughborough University, commencing October 2013. Declines in physical activity behaviour are often observed through early adolescence. As yet, we do not know why these developmental declines occur despite the huge economic, societal and academic benefits in gaining such knowledge. Accordingly, the proposed project will explore whether children who differ in their physical activity trends over early adolescence can be identified prior to the onset of such patterns. For example, children who maintain high levels of physical activity across early adolescence may have a distinct profile aged 11 (e.g., demographics, motivational orientation, and biological maturity), compared to children who experience a decline in physical activity behaviour. Numerous socio-psychological correlates have been associated with children’s physical activity in previous survey and longitudinal work conducted by the supervisor and colleagues. The studentship will extend this work by considering potential predictors from a multidisciplinary perspective. Following the identification of different groups of children who represent heterogeneous profiles, imaginative and novel ways to promote adaptive physical activity behaviour patterns will be explored and tested.
