DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship
The DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship is designed to empower young refugees and national scholars from across the African continent by supporting their academic and professional development at higher education institutions in Germany. This initiative, funded by the German Government, provides fully funded opportunities for qualified African students to pursue postgraduate (Master’s) degrees.
As a recipient of the DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship, you will benefit from a tuition-free education, an annual living stipend of €11,208, free accommodation, coverage of travel expenses, and an additional allowance to support dependents such as a spouse or children.
Specifically targeting applicants from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda, this scholarship programme was established to address the impact of conflict and displacement in these regions. It aims to nurture future leaders who can contribute to the sustainable development and reconstruction of their home countries.
The Leadership for Africa scholarship supports Master’s degree studies in all academic fields—excluding medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, law, fine arts, and architecture.
In addition to their regular studies, scholarship holders will participate in a mandatory complementary training programme focused on good governance, civil society engagement, and career development.
Eligibility Requirements for the DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship
To be eligible for the DAAD Africa Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Hold a Bachelor’s degree that qualifies for admission to a Master’s program in Germany

The Bachelor’s degree must be equivalent to at least a Second Class Upper Division
-
The last academic degree should have been completed within the past 6 years (refer to Section A, point 2 of the official guidelines)

Demonstrate proficiency in English or German

Refugee applicants must provide a valid Refugee ID card issued before April 3, 2024
DAAD Africa Scholarship: Duration and Benefits
Scholarship Duration
Selected candidates will begin a German language course in April 2025 (at the earliest). Academic studies at a German university are expected to commence by October 1, 2026.
Scholarship Benefits
The DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship offers a comprehensive support package that includes:

Up to 6 months of intensive German language training in Germany prior to the start of the Master’s program

Includes coverage for language test fees (e.g., TestDaF or DSH)

Pocket money and accommodation during the language course

Monthly stipend of €934 for living expenses throughout the study period

Full health, accident, and personal liability insurance while in Germany

Travel allowance to cover international transportation

Annual study allowance to support academic needs

Participation in the mandatory LEAD! training program focused on leadership and civic engagement

Required Documents for the DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship 2025
To apply for the DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship 2025, applicants must prepare and submit the following documents:
Completed Online Application Form
Available on the DAAD portal. Ensure all sections are accurately filled out.
Curriculum Vitae (Maximum 3 Pages)
Include details of your academic background, previous scholarships, current address, and any past or current employment. Use the European format available at:
Europass CV Template.
Letter of Motivation (1–3 Pages)
Clearly explain your academic, professional, and personal motivations for pursuing your chosen study program.
DAAD “Study Course Profile” Form
Indicate up to three Master’s programs you wish to apply for. Note: DAAD does not accept programs that require tuition fees.
“Additional Master’s Degree” Form (if applicable)
If you already hold or are completing a Master’s degree, this form must explain in detail your reasons for pursuing a second Master’s.
Proof of Language Proficiency
Submit certificates demonstrating the required language skills for your selected Master’s programs.
Academic Certificates and Transcripts
Provide your university degree certificate, final grade(s), and transcripts for all academic years, including a grading system explanation.
Proof of Identity and Residency
Copies of your passport or national ID card, including the biodata page and any documents indicating your current residency status.
For Refugee Applicants
Include your Refugee ID card, UNHCR registration, or official proof of asylum issued by government or relevant authorities.

How to Apply for the 2025 DAAD Africa Scholarship in Germany (Step-by-Step Guide)
If you are interested and eligible for the 2025 DAAD Africa Scholarship, follow the steps below to complete your application successfully:
Step 1: Register on the DAAD Portal
Visit the DAAD Portal and create an account to begin your application process.
Step 2: Complete the Online Application
Download and Fill Out the Application Form:
Access and complete the DAAD online application form provided on the portal.
Prepare Your Application Documents:

Translate Documents (if necessary):
Any documents not in English or German must be officially translated.
Scan and Save Documents as PDFs:
All documents (except letters of reference) should be scanned and saved in PDF format. Only PDFs are accepted for upload.
