Japan Study Support Scholarships for International Students
The Government of Japan is now accepting applications for Japan Study Support Scholarships, designed for international students who wish to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate degrees at Japanese universities.
The scholarship provides financial support of 1,000,000 Yen to assist with tuition, living, and accommodation expenses during the first year of study, after the applicant secures admission to a Japanese university.
The Japan Study Support Scholarships are open to international students from around the world, excluding Japanese citizens, who are ready to begin their higher education journey in Japan. Most scholarships are targeted at students enrolled in universities and colleges across Japan.
Meeting the academic, age, and financial requirements significantly improves your chances of receiving a scholarship.
Note:
All scholarship recipients are required to submit periodic reports throughout their scholarship period (several times a year). These reports may be published on the JPSS website or included in related information booklets.
Japan Study Support Scholarship Requirements
To be eligible for the Japan Study Support Scholarship, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
- Must have been accepted and confirmed enrollment into a Japanese university undergraduate or graduate degree program starting in spring (April/May) 2025 or autumn (September–November) 2025.
- Must have a registered MY PAGE account with JAPAN STUDY SUPPORT (JPSS).
- Must have received a message from the university via the JPSS Scout function before acceptance.
- Must be able to interview in either Japanese or English.
- Must hold a Japanese bank account (in the applicant’s name) to receive scholarship payments (internet banks are not accepted).
- Must not be a Japanese citizen.
Japan Study Support Scholarship Benefits
The scholarship offers:
- 500,000 yen in financial support for one successful applicant after enrollment at the specified Japanese university.
- 100,000 yen in financial support for two successful applicants after enrollment at the specified Japanese university.
Required Documents for Application
Applicants must prepare and submit the following documents:
- Application form (basic personal and academic information)
- Short essay (up to 350 words in English or 800 characters in Japanese) on your "Motivation to Study in Japan and Future Goals"
- Self-introduction video (no more than 30 seconds in length)
Important Notes:
- If any false information is discovered in the application, the application will be rejected, and any disbursed scholarship funds must be returned.
- If a successful applicant fails to complete, withdraws from, or is expelled from their program, they must repay all scholarship funds received.
