The Mastercard Foundation is currently accepting applications for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship at the University of Gondar from qualified and interested African students. This fully funded scholarship opportunity is part of Mastercard Foundation’s commitment to empowering young Africans through education.
The scholarship covers all major expenses, including tuition, accommodation, living stipends, a laptop, flight costs, and meals at the university canteens. Launched in the 2018/19 academic year, the program aims to award 160 graduate scholarships over a span of eight years.
The Mastercard Foundation Scholarship specifically targets academically talented but economically disadvantaged youth from five East African countries: Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and South Sudan.
The Graduate Scholars Program is designed to nurture transformative leadership and professional excellence. It equips scholars with the skills and competencies needed to make meaningful contributions at the global, regional, national, and local levels.
Throughout their time at the University of Gondar, scholars will benefit from robust academic and non-academic support, ensuring a holistic and enriching educational experience.
Eligibility Criteria for the 2025 University of Gondar Mastercard Foundation Scholarship
To be considered for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship at the University of Gondar, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Academic Qualifications: Hold a bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the intended graduate program from a recognized university, with English as the medium of instruction. The degree must have been obtained within the last five years.
Academic Performance: Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
Nationality & Residency: Be a citizen and permanent resident of one of the following countries — Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, or South Sudan — and must have lived in the respective country for at least the past five years.

Two recommendation letters from previous universities

Proof of financial need, such as a testimonial from the Kebele/Woreda Administrator

A criminal background clearance from the District Police Office
