The University of British Columbia (UBC) offers merit-based scholarships to exceptional international students, ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 for undergraduate studies. UBC allocates over $30 million annually in scholarships and awards for international undergraduate students. This includes prestigious awards such as the International Major Entrance Scholarships (IMES), Outstanding International Student (OIS) Awards, and the UBC Okanagan International Welcome Award. These scholarships are designed to recognize and support outstanding international students from diverse backgrounds who demonstrate academic excellence and community involvement.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be new to UBC, entering directly from secondary school or post-secondary (university or college).
- Applicants must be international students intending to study at UBC with a Canadian study permit (student visa).
- Applicants must demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and significant extracurricular involvement.
- For the International Major Entrance Scholarship (IMES), applicants must not be nominated for the need-and-merit-based International Scholars award.
- For the Outstanding International Student (OIS) Award, applicants must not be nominated for the need-and-merit-based International Scholars award.
Selection Process:
Applicants are evaluated based on:
- Academic achievement
- Extracurricular involvement
- Community engagement
- The selection process is competitive, and scholarship evaluations take place after admission decisions. Recipients will be notified between mid-March and the end of April.

- International Major Entrance Scholarship (IMES): up to $10,000 – $20,000/year.
- Outstanding International Student (OIS): up to $10,000 – $25,000.
- UBC Okanagan International Welcome Award: $5,000 award
How to Apply
Applicants will be automatically considered for merit-based awards when applying for admission to UBC, with no separate application required. Scholarship decisions are based on the applicant’s academic and personal profile after receiving an offer of admission to the university.
