Closing date: 30 September 2013
A PhD studentship funded by the European Research Council (ERC) is available from January 2014 to work with Dr Michael De Volder in the University of Cambridge, Department of Engineering. The successful candidates will develop new technologies for the arrangement of carbon nanoparticles (e.g. carbon nanotubes or graphene) into well-defined superstructures. Â
The Project
The project will follow a methodical approach, bringing together different fields of expertise ranging from macro- and microscale manufacturing, to nanoscale material synthesis and chemical surface modification. The project will investigate top-down lithography driven techniques as well as bottom-up self-assembly techniques, and will look into the ability to scale up the developed processes. The materials developed in this project will find applications in the fields of energy storage, water filtration, and other smart materials. Â
The Studentship
The successful applicant will have at least a 1st or 2.1 class degree or equivalent. We will consider students with various backgrounds, including chemical engineering, material science, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering.Â
Due to funding restrictions the studentship is dependent on confirmation of funding by the sponsors. The scholarship will pay £22,068.00 (tax free) in the first year, from which students will be liable to pay their own fees (approx. £6,500 per year for UK/EU students).
Stipend: Year 2 - £23,641.00, Year 3 - 25,321.00, Year 4 - £27,122.00
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Michael De Volder (mfld2@cam.ac.uk).
