Fully Funded Master’s Scholarship at Montana State University (Spring 2026)
The Montana State University Master’s Scholarship offers a fully funded graduate assistantship for students interested in pursuing a Master’s degree in Ecology or related fields in the United States. Starting in January 2026, the successful applicant will join a collaborative research project led by Montana State University, the Smithsonian Institution National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, and the Fort Belknap Fish and Wildlife Department.
Research Focus
This assistantship centers on a field-based research project studying the genetics and movement ecology of swift foxes on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation in northern Montana.
The project aims to investigate:

Genetic diversity

Gene flow

Kinship patterns

Dispersal behavior

Home range dynamics
The study will focus on a newly reintroduced population of swift foxes following translocation efforts conducted between 2020–2023.

Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science, Ecology, Zoology, or a related field

Minimum GPA of 3.0 in biology courses and in junior/senior-level courses; 2.5 GPA in chemistry, physics, and math

Strong interest in field research and remote grassland ecosystems

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Strong work ethic, motivation, and ability to work independently and as part of a team

Skills or interest in:

Quantitative ecology and evolutionary biology

Scientific programming and bioinformatics

Basic laboratory techniques
