Deakin University provides a variety of government and university-funded scholarships to support students throughout their research journey.

The RTP Scholarships are funded by the Australian Government, while the DUPR Scholarships are supported by Deakin University. Both scholarships are open to domestic and international students.

These PhD and research degree scholarships may cover:

Tuition fees
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
Living allowances (stipends)
Relocation allowances

2025 Deakin University Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Deakin University Scholarship, applicants must:

Be either a domestic or international student enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program at Deakin University.
Have completed at least four years of tertiary education.
Not be receiving a similar scholarship or award from the Commonwealth that covers HDR tuition fees.
Not receive additional income exceeding 75% of the RTP or DUPRS stipend rate for living expenses while pursuing their studies.
Have obtained at least 80% or an equivalent score in the research component of their previous studies OR demonstrate equivalent academic achievement through prior study, relevant work experience, research publications, or other research experience.
Meet all minimum entry requirements as outlined in the Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) Admission, Selection, and Enrollment Procedure.

Benefits of the 2025 Deakin University HDR Scholarship

Stipend and Allowances
Annual Stipend: $35,550 per year (tax-exempt, 2024 rate).
Relocation Allowance:
$500 – $1,500, depending on whether the student moves alone or with family, for those relocating from interstate or overseas to study at Deakin.
Health Coverage (International Students Only):
Single Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the student visa.

Scholarship Duration

Doctoral Degree (PhD):

Stipend: Up to 3 years.
Tuition Fee Offset: Up to 4 years.

Research Master’s Degree:

Stipend: Up to 2 years.
Tuition Fee Offset: Up to 2 years.

Applicants must complete and submit an EoI form at least 4 weeks before the scholarship deadline.

Steps to Completing the EoI Form

Step 1: Contact a potential supervisor in your field of research.

Step 2: Obtain approval from the supervisor, who will invite you to submit an EoI.

Step 3: Complete sections 1-9 of the EoI form and send it to the supervisor.

Step 4: The supervisor reviews and fills out sections 10-13 of the form.

Step 5: The supervisor submits the completed EoI form along with supporting documents to the relevant faculty email.
