The Melbourne Research Scholarship and Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship are prestigious awards for high-achieving international and domestic students enrolling in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne.
Each year, the university grants over 300 scholarships to international students. Since 2016, the Melbourne International Research Scholarship (MIRS) has been integrated into the Melbourne Research Scholarship program.
Eligible applicants are evaluated and ranked based on their academic performance in their most recently completed degree and their research potential within their chosen field of study.
Eligibility Requirements for the 2025 University of Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarships
To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must:
- Have applied for and met the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or
- Be currently enrolled in a graduate research program at the university.
- Open to both Australian nationals and international students.
Benefits of the University of Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarships
- Full tuition fee coverage:
- Up to 2 years for a Master’s by Research degree.
- Up to 4 years for a Doctoral (PhD) degree.
- Living allowance of $38,500 per year (2024 full-time study rate):
- Up to 2 years for a Master’s by Research degree.
- Up to 3.5 years for a Doctoral degree.
- Relocation grant:
- $2,000 for students moving from other Australian states or territories.
- $3,000 for students relocating from outside Australia.
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students requiring a student visa to study in Australia.

Interested and qualified applicants should follow these steps to apply:
- Visit the Application Page – Click “APPLY HERE” to access the scholarship portal.
- Apply for a Graduate Research Degree – Submit an application for a Master’s by Research or PhD program at the University of Melbourne.
- Automatic Consideration –If you are a new student and apply for a graduate research program before the course application deadline, you will automatically be considered for the scholarship.
- Application Confirmation – Within 10 business days of submitting your course application, you will receive a notification confirming that a scholarship application has been added to your record.
