PTDF Announces Commencement of 2025/2026 Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme
The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) is pleased to inform the general public that applications are now open for the 2025/2026 Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme (OSS).
The PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme is designed to develop indigenous human capacity to meet the needs of the Nigerian Oil and Gas industry. The scheme has been recently restructured to further enhance local capacity development initiatives. The scholarship covers all major expenses, including airfare, health insurance, tuition, bench fees (where applicable), and living costs.
Scholarship Opportunities Under the Restructured Scheme:

MSc Scholarships: Fully funded programmes available in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia.

PhD Scholarships: Fully funded programmes offered in Germany, France, and Malaysia.

UK PhD Scholarships: Now exclusively offered as Split-Site Programmes through the PTDF College of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK), in collaboration with the following UK partner universities:

PTDF Overseas Scholarship Program: Funding, Eligibility, and Program Structure
The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship for 2025 offers a comprehensive funding package for successful applicants. The scholarship covers full tuition—up to £30,000 per year—alongside return airfare, accommodation allowances ranging from £12,000 to £15,000 annually, and a monthly living stipend of £1,000 (approximately ₦1.8 million per year, based on current exchange rates). Additionally, PhD candidates receive a ₦500,000 research grant, typically used for fieldwork in Nigeria’s oil-impacted regions.
Selection Process, Criteria & Requirements
PTDF scholarships are highly competitive, and only candidates who are outstanding across the board are selected.
Based on the submitted qualifications, the top applicants for each category from each state will be invited for an interview where a selection committee will be constituted to assess applications using the following criteria:

Academic merit as evidenced by the quality of degrees, full academic transcripts and other professional qualifications acquired

Relevant publications to be referenced by applicant (PhD applicants only)

Membership of professional bodies
-
The viability and relevance of the study/research plan.

Relevance of previous studies to the oil and gas industry and the proposed course/research
MSc Requirements
-
Applicants must be Nigerian citizens.
-
A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) qualification in their first degree or a Second Class Lower (2.2) with relevant industry experience

Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
-
Must be computer literate
-
Possession of 5 O/level credits, including English Language and Mathematics.

Statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) stating the reason(s) for the proposed study, its relevance to the industry and its expected impact on national development.

Applicants must have a National Identity Number (NIN) and will be required to have verified it (NIMC verification charges apply)before applying for the scholarship.

Age limits: Under 35 years for MSc applicants
PhD Requirements

Applicants must be Nigerian citizens.

Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
-
Must be computer literate
-
Possession of 5 O/level credits, including English Language and Mathematics.

A minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) in their first degree and a good post-graduate degree
-
A research proposal relevant to the oil and gas industry (of not more than five pages) to include: Topic, introduction, objective, methodology and mode of data collection.

All lecturers must produce a letter from their Vice Chancellors confirming that they are not in receipt of any other scholarships

Age limits: Under 40 years for PhD applicants.
Program Duration and Commitments:
-
Master’s programmes in the UK typically last one year, while those outside the UK span two years.
-
PhD programmes take three to four years to complete.

Scholars must sign a two-year return service bond, which is enforced through nominated guarantors.
Selection and Focus Areas:
In 2024, PTDF selected 3,853 MSc and 1,880 PhD scholars from over 20,000 applicants through its online portal (scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng). For 2025, the program aims for a similar scale, with a sharper focus on oil and gas-related fields such as reservoir engineering and emerging areas like solar thermodynamics.
As part of its inclusivity efforts, PTDF prioritizes female applicants and candidates from northern Nigeria.
