SASTE Grant for Research Stay in Austria – Supporting High-Potential Scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa
The SASTE Grant provides funding for high-potential researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa working in Agriculture, Forestry, Water Management, Renewable Energies, Nutritional Science, and Human & Veterinary Medicine to undertake a research stay in Austria. Research projects that incorporate Technical Sciences and IT in these fields are also eligible for application.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Be a post-doctoral scientist under 42 years old (women under 45 years old if involved in child care).

Hold a research position in Africa, ensuring they will continue their work at their home institution after the research stay.

Have research experience in one of the eligible fields.

A PhD earned outside Austria is preferred but not mandatory. If the research stay is at the same Austrian university or department where the PhD was earned, the project must have a novel aspect.

Must not have studied or worked in Austria for at least six months before the planned research stay.

Have 3 to 7 years of post-doctoral research experience at a university or higher research institution in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Hold a contract with their home institution for at least two more years after the research stay (confirmation required).

Provide confirmation from the Austrian host institution and supervisor that they will support the applicant and provide the necessary resources (office space, facilities, etc.).

Demonstrate excellent language proficiency in English or German.
Required Documents
Applicants must submit the following documents:

Research proposal (6–10 pages) outlining the project, methodology, relevance, and impact.

Motivation letter (up to 2 pages).

Curriculum vitae including a list of publications and achievements.
-
Employment confirmation proving a 2-year contract upon return.

Recommendation letter from the head of the home institution.

Confirmation of in-kind contributions from the home institution.

Recommendation letter from the host institution in Austria.

Disclosure of additional funding (if applicable).

Identity documents, including a passport, birth certificate, and extract from the judicial record.
Eligible Countries
The SASTE Grant is open to researchers from Sub-Saharan African countries.
SASTE Grant Benefits

Grant Duration: 12 to 24 months, depending on project complexity (extensions are not possible).

Monthly Stipend: €1,500 to support living expenses.

Housing Support: Up to €600 per month.

Travel Budget: Up to €3,000 per year for visits to the home institution and participation in scientific conferences.

Funding for Host Institution: Up to €2,500 per year, allocated according to the approved work and budget plan.

In-Kind Contributions: The home institution must confirm support for fieldwork, technical equipment, and other necessary resources.

Additional Funding: Any extra financial support related to the research project is beneficial but must.
