Full Scholarship, Stipend, Accommodation & Return Ticket
The NAI Scholarship Programme offers Masters and PhD researchers in Africa the opportunity to advance their ongoing research at the institute. The scholarship covers travel expenses, as well as settling and living allowances. Recipients are also provided with a dedicated workspace and a personal computer for their research. Through this initiative, the Nordic Africa Institute seeks to enhance knowledge production about Africa while fostering collaboration between African and Nordic research communities.
2026 Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) Scholarship Requirements
The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) Scholarship is open to:

Full-time staff members of African-based universities or research centers who are enrolled in a doctoral program within Africa and do not have access to an international scholarship.

Postdoctoral researchers who completed their PhD within the last five years.

All African researchers.

Applicants must be affiliated with universities or research centers in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, or Iceland.
Benefits of the NAI Scholarship Programme
The scholarship covers:

Round-trip airfare (economy class).
-
Accommodation.
-
A subsistence allowance of 400 SEK (approx. 40 USD) per day.

An installation grant of 2,500 SEK (approx. 250 USD).

Access to a dedicated workspace, including a desk and computer, in a shared office at the Institute.

Full access to the Institute’s specialized library on contemporary Africa, with a focus on Social Sciences. Additionally, scholars can use the Uppsala University Library and the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Opportunities to present research at the Nordic Africa Institute and visit other academic institutions in the Nordic region.
Required Documents for the NAI Scholarship
Applicants must apply online and submit the following:

Updated CV (including a list of publications, with links if available online).

Research project outline (5 pages) including: A well-developed research proposal.

Work plan (1 page) detailing:Research objectives and expected outcomes during the stay at the Institute.

Reference letter: A signed letter of support from the applicant’s Head of Department or a senior scholar in the same field, confirming their current affiliation and research focus.
