Chevening Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS) Fellowship 2026
The Chevening OCIS Fellowship supports outstanding professionals and scholars committed to advancing knowledge and understanding of the culture and civilisation of Islam and contemporary Muslim societies.
A collaboration between the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS), the programme offers:
- Chevening OCIS Fellowship
- Chevening OCIS Abdullah Gül Fellowship (for Turkish citizens)
Fellows undertake a five-month, self-directed research project at OCIS in Oxford, focusing on their chosen topic within the global context of Islamic culture and civilisation. The fellowship begins in October 2024.
About OCIS
The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies is a recognised independent centre of the University of Oxford, dedicated to advanced study of Islam and the Muslim world. It serves as a meeting point between Western and Islamic scholarship, encouraging dialogue and collaboration.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Demonstrate leadership potential and influence.
- Be a citizen of one of the eligible countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Occupied Palestinian Territories, Philippines, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan.
- Return to their country of citizenship after the fellowship.
- Hold a postgraduate qualification or equivalent professional experience.
- Have at least five years of professional or academic research experience.
- Possess strong English language skills.
- Not hold British or dual-British citizenship.
- Not be an employee, former employee, or close relative of an employee of His Majesty’s Government or other ineligible organisations (within the last two years).
Note: Those who have previously received a UK government–funded award may apply after five years, provided they demonstrate career progression since completing their first award.

- A short research proposal, including a main research question and methodology.
- Commitment to reside in Oxford for the fellowship period. (OCIS will assist with accommodation information.)
